List love: karaoke songs

Almost everyone has a secret passion for being a rock star, and there is no better way to indulge your inner Mick Jagger or Deborah Harry than through karaoke. You don’t even need to be a good singer to have your audience wrapped around your little finger. All you need is a crowd-friendly, singalong tune, a bit of liquid confidence, and a whole lot of enthusiasm!

Here are the top 5 recommendations for karaoke songs that will always get an audience on your side:

5.  Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen

Some will say that this song is way too long for a karaoke song – at 5:57 it takes up twice as much time as the average song – but everyone loves to emulate that Wayne’s World head-banging moment as well as practising their falsetto.

4.  Love Shack – B52s

A fun pop duet that even the men love, even if they wouldn’t normally admit it. You can see right through their denials though when they’re all singing, “Tiiiiiiin roof! RUSTY!”

3.  Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi

A rock song about overcoming adversity with love. It’s nigh on impossible to hear this song without yelling along, “oooooh we’re half way there…” because after a few beers actual singing is pretty difficult but shouting capabilities are still in check.

2.  Don’t Stop Believing – Journey

Even before the song was Glee-fied, this song has to be one of the greatest power ballads of all time. Do Journey even have any other songs?

1.  Sweet Child O’ Mine – Guns ‘n’ Roses

A classic Gunners track and arguably the best guitar intro ever, and if you can nail Axl’s finishing line, in tune, you will have the audience thoroughly impressed, and hopefully buying you drinks!

  1. What about the Darkness “I believe in a thing called love” – perfect for falsetto AND rocking out with some major air guitar! Actually I’ve been campaigning for it as my walk down the aisle song (he’s not having any of it)…

    • Love it! What’s not to like about the song I say? The lyrics would be so romantic for a wedding – “my heart’s in overdrive and you’re behind the steering wheel”, “I wanna kiss you every minute every hour of every day” – gorgeous!

  2. Whilst karaoke offers fun to those socially lubricated enough, I often approach these nights with little more than lukewarm trepidation. You’ll find me in the corner chain drinking until I’m comfortable enough to finally give in to those forcing the mic on me every second song!! UNLEASH THE MONSTER…having broken the seal you’ll then have to wrestle the mic from me, the only break you’ll then get is the regular toilet break having drunk my body weight in spirits. Is Karaoke fun for all? best ask all those people spending most of the night listening to my tone deaf rendition of Robbie Williams ANGELS…

The Jury is most definitely not still out!!

  3. The thing I love about karaoke is actually finding out what the real words actually are… not so great when you realise the guess you’d taken all those years ago just wasn’t the right one… 🙂
